After the first year
The first year after transplant, she had pneumonia four times, and then she had a UTI. She was hospitalized for those, but the fourth time, Dr. Harmon finally got us a nebulizer, and he said, “This is what you do. If she has pneumonia, give her this.” So we learned to manage it, and we became accustomed to taking care of her for the pneumonias.
And then by the fall of the second year (it was a spring transplant, so by the following year in the fall), she was unbelievable. She went to school…life pretty much returned to normal, for the most part. For her anyway! And for us, as parents, we just had to get used to doing a lot more management with the meds and with her life in general.
She did get sick a lot in the first year, but after that she’s been great.
