They've Been Through It

DIANE: Preparing for Jake's surgeries and while I'm in the hospital, the people who said exactly what I needed them to say and sometimes what that meant was saying nothing at all, were the people who had been there. They just knew. Or you could start joking about it. You develop a little bit of a sick sense of humor. You start joking about the chest tubes and how gross they are. You can joke about these things because they've been through it. I don't know -- you're starting on the same page, I guess.
